Natural Enemies For Greenhouse Pests

Biological control program for protecting plants from pest attack is one of the most effective methods that will help plants to achieve good level of growth. This is one of the most effective and best methods that can be used to prevent pest attack of plants inside greenhouse. The introduction of natural enemies for greenhouse pests will be of good use in preventing the outgrowth of pests in plants. There are many steps that will be of good use in estimating amount of natural enemies required in this process. Another important process that will determine the success of pest control program is timing of natural enemy application. There are 3 main methods that can be used for preventing the pest attack of plants inside greenhouse. The three process that can be used for this purpose are listed

  • Conservation
  • Inoculation
  • Inundation

Conservation method

This method involves attraction and preservation of various kinds of native insects that will be beneficial in the process of attacking pests. Although, this method is more viable for outdoor usage, there are certain cases in which this method becomes increasingly more useful for greenhouse plants. This method has been used effectively to attract parasitic wasp of native origin to destroy tomato leaf miner pests. Adequate control for removing substantial level of pests can be obtained through this method

Inoculation method

Small insects

In this method, smaller amount of insects will be introduced into the greenhouse and these insects are capable of destroying pests that are found inside. This is one of the useful methods for controlling smaller amount of pests that are found early in the season. For this reason, the natural enemies will be introduced in smaller quantities at the beginning of the year. There are many people who have been satisfied in a great manner with the reproducibility ability of these insects to provide more effective protection as the season proceeds. Since this method requires only little insect introduction, this will be an economic and viable option for all greenhouse growers.

Inundation method

Large quantities of natural enemies will be introduced to fight substantial level of pest population that is found in greenhouse. More level of pests will be destroyed in a rapid manner. There will be increased level of benefits that can be obtained with this process since this process can be successfully used to prevent massive pest attack in plants. The operating cost of this process is higher since there is necessity to introduce more number of insects.
