Subirrigation System in Field Crops and Usage in Greenhouses

There are many advantages to having a subirrigation system in commercial farming enterprises whether this is outdoor or indoor. The first advantage is that labour costs are reduced as labourers do not need to be employed to water crops. All that needs to happen is that the system is turned on. The pipes underground will release water so that it goes into the plants’ root systems.  This is far more economical in terms of water used and money spent than other surface systems. Subirrigation systems may be operated manually or by computer, so are really labour-saving. Because subirrigation systems are linked to drainage systems no water is lost due to run-off. This is beneficial for our planet as a whole as water is now a precious commodity. If a subirrigation system is installed in a greenhouse, the grower can expect an increase in crop yields, as more space is freed up for plants.

Many growers who use a subirrigation system have reported that plants grow more uniformly and suffer from less leaf disease when a subirrigation system is used. Moreover, the grower is helping the environment by not using valuable drinking water for agricultural purposes as these subirrigation systems prevent excess water and fertilizer escaping from the greenhouse, and these are recycled as they flow to a tank which stores them for future use.

Disadvantages of Subirrigation System

There are disadvantages to this system, both in the greenhouse and in fields. First of all there is the cost of installation and the time spent learning how to use the system to its full potential. Subirrigation system Also growers have to learn how to test the pH balance of the soil and other skills associated with this kind of crop production. In fields there is the problem of the pipes which conduct the water being accidentally ruptured in the course of ploughing or harvesting. However with added care all these problems can be overcome.

Growers can also use the subirrigation system to apply plant growth regulators, and of course, when a crop has been harvested and before a new one is planted the whole system can be cleared of waste plant material and disinfected ready for the next planting. This is fairly pain-free and again not as labour intensive as other methods.



Crops benefit from subirrigation systems as the water goes directly to the root level rather than having to permeate the soil. Thus moisture which is needed by each plant is sucked up naturally and then the run-off seeps back into the pipe system, to be transferred to a storage tank. Btw, What is Sub Irrigation ? –> here

The advantages of using a subirrigation system in the long term far outweigh the disadvantages, as there is no water wastage and this not only has the effect of not harming the environment and depleting a natural resource, but also, lowers the grower’s water bills. The crop yield will probably increase too as many growers have reported, so economically this is a viable system. Subirrigation systems have been in use for more than twenty years, and those who use them testify to their use both in fields and in greenhouses. Advise to use subirrigation system.
